I’m in and out of doodling these days, using it for processing thoughts as much as for entertaining myself. I’ve been writing more, but somehow the thoughts haven’t seemed a fit for Doodle Dispatches. The writing has been either too niche or too dark—topics I haven’t known HOW to doodle.
I’ve wrestled with this before (you may remember my “Getting Grim” post), and found ways of processing through doodles. I may do more of that. But for times when I’m not finding that path, I will occasionally be posting over on Reflections on Family, where I tend to wear more of a history nerd/researcher hat.
Today is a rare crossover. I’ve been trying to grasp what significance J.D. Vance might have as Trump’s choice:
Honestly, I can’t fit a face or a significance to him at all. Vance is beside the point. He is a cipher designed to emphasize Trump’s tough guy, blue collar, Everyman appeal. Which is to say, Vance is there to keep polishing the pretense until Trump crosses the finish line of dictatorship. Once that line is crossed, I think we all know that there will be other (nameless, faceless) actors behind this “administration” calling the shots.
If you’re curious about how I processed this while wearing my history hat, the news had me spinning on how current events resonate with my grandfather’s time as a journalist in 1936 Paris.
You’re very welcome to hear my thoughts, regardless of which hat I’m wearing on a given day, and I hope you’ll follow me over at Reflections on Family, too. It won’t all be grim, I promise!
